Follow Me.
When I was in LA the other week I visited
LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions) in Hollywood. Some of you might remember LACE's director, Carol Stakenas, a former Deputy Director of Creative Time. I felt like I had drawn a little circle when I walked through the door and looked up to see the exploration of fashion by the
LA Art Girls. One of first Creative Time installations I ever witnessed was--during Stakenas' tenure--
Exposing Meaning in Fashion Through Presentation in The Anchorage in 1999. Like I said: a nice little circle.
That's not the not the only time I was reminded of Creative Time though. Stakenas' and LACE's drive to engage with the community is similarly inspiring. Their Fluxus-themed show,
Draw a Line and Follow It was a feisty and full-on adventure. I go off on it
here. If you're in LA, I highly recommend drawing a line and following it to LACE. They kinda rule.
SHOCKED.
I try to make it up to Times Square to every time there's a new installment of
The 59th Minute. One of the things I've come to love about it are the the odd juxtapositions that sometimes occur between the rolling news text and the art. It's especially pronounced with something as still as
Healer by Euan Macdonald. Sometimes these pairings make for good DADA, but every now and again things get very direct and they speak to us like a Ouiji board. In the last photo the ghost in the machine reminds us once again that we really can't separate art and money.
Musick To Play In The Dark.
The problem with magic is that people expect to be like Bewitched, a twitch of the nose followed by some immediate change. Magic isn't like that: It's a catalyst that sets things in motion. Something was going on because at the after party for the opening I met a woman with whom I shared my Christmas Eve birthday which led to
this which led to
that. And trust me,
that was magic. Need I say more?
Probably, because I really liked the art, but it's much easier to let somebody talk about it. Stephen Kaplan wrote a
review on his art blog,
What Goes Around. Check it out.
